On September 19th, former Tunghai University president Haydn Chen spoke in front of the Class of 2021 for two hours on the merits of higher education in general and the flowering International College. President Chen is the IC’s honorary special chair. Speaking English for the new students, he also shared the bullet points of his personally cultivated philosophy on what it means to be an educated, civilized student in the midst of modern times. President Chen’s resume speaks for itself: He taught and performed research for the University of Illinois for nearly thirty years, was the chair of the Material Sciences department at The City of Hong Kong University from 2000-2004, served until 2012 as Tunghai’s president, and was vice rector of student affairs for Macau University for the past five years. This wealth of international experience is something rare and exciting, and the International College’s administration is thrilled to have President Chen in their corner. Though he will serve at nearby Jiaotong University as a full-time professor, the college expects his presence to loom large as we continue forward.
